Hello and Welcome!

Welcome to [livejournal.com profile] fan_comics, the place for all your fan-commiccy needs.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or questions.

Currently I, [livejournal.com profile] alias_sqbr, am the only moderator. I really don't have a lot of time or energy to devote to this community, so expect some pretty lazy modding, but the idea got into my head about a year ago and despite my best efforts Would Not Go Away. I've never created a community before, so there may be a bumpy ride as I get the hang of it!

And yes, I did post a LOT on this first day. I do not intend to post so much from here on out :)

About a year and a half ago I realised there seemed to be NO resources for fancomics online, and I got a bee in my bonnet about it. I'm going to spread the stuff I found/made over a few posts, if nothing else it should create a nice set of tags to get us going.

First: pages about fancomics. The last two are fairly sparse wiki entries.

Here's a bunch of places to find more fancomics.

alias_sqbr: Torchwood spoilers for various episode numbers: Jack dies (torchwood spoilers)
[personal profile] alias_sqbr
Fancomics based on "Angel: The Series". (Interestingly, there's these and quite a few about Firefly, but I haven't encountered any about Buffy. Possibly people don't feel the need since there's so many official spin-off comics)

Some comics based on the world of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.

I was linked these when I asked about fancomics on [livejournal.com profile] fanthropology, but haven't actually read them since I have vain hopes of one day finishing the game so don't want to be too spoiled.

These are all pretty cute.

And don't forget [livejournal.com profile] hpcomics!

House MD fancomics. These all have somewhat similar surreal humour, I'm not sure if they know each other or if that's just an inevitable effect of the show :)
alias_sqbr: Torchwood spoilers for various episode numbers: Jack dies (torchwood spoilers)
[personal profile] alias_sqbr
Stargate Atlantis fancomics. (I have yet to encounter any Stargate SG1 ones)

  • [livejournal.com profile] isaymckay: Similar to [livejournal.com profile] iharthdarth, very cute
  • artword A cool idea: artists and fanfic writers come together, seems to mostly produce photocomics

This should be it for the giant lists of doom! Note that I'm just listing these for completeness since people might be interested, I'm not recommending them all.

alias_sqbr: Torchwood spoilers for various episode numbers: Jack dies (torchwood spoilers)

The Ten doctors A remarkable sprawling fun epic with all the doctors (well, the first ten :))

Right! I had one more example of the sort of post people could do here left on my list: introduction/self promotion. So here we go :)

I got into fanfic/fanart etc fandom a few years ago but never really felt like I was a part of it creatively, until I suddenly realised that a lot of the "webcomic" stuff I do is in fact fancomics. Having come to that realisation I was disappointed to realise that fancomics, in and of themselves, don't really have their own niche in fandom. I was then strongly overcome with the urge to create one all by myself, an urge I eventually gave into today :)

I don't actually create that many fan comics, since in general I produce creative stuff at a pretty slow rate.

I guess the first organised fancomics I did were for [livejournal.com profile] skeletor_hordak, a group He-man comic created by some guys in local (australian) science fiction fandom.
I then decided to draw one to help out the just-starting community [livejournal.com profile] red_packet.
Since then I've decided to get into fanart in a bigger way, and got my friends to give me some prompts, some of which resulted in fan comics. From there? Who knows.

All my fancomics can be seen at the fannish tag at my comics blog, the two I'm most proud of are The cast of Firefly celebrating Chinese new year and Steampunk Pride and Prejudice (even if I didn't write my own dialogue for that one :))
